Angel's Virtue

A SCENE FROM ANGEL’S VIRTUE

LANA

(voice)

(screaming into a phone)

Bonnie's not, "...just a man hater!" She's right. All men are pricks. And you're a limp prick, 'cause you won't get a job and help me! LANA slams the phone down.

There is the sound and smell of pop-corn being made.

In the darkness we hear HANNAH singing "I am Woman" to a sing-along tape. Midway through, she mis-sings.

HANNAH
(politely) Shit. The lights come up, and HANNAH rewinds the tape. The player makes a very loud and very annoying rewinding sound.
LANA
(voice) AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!! ALLI runs in, head and body wrapped in towels with cotton between her toes and her nails wet.
ALLI

If you have to rewind the tape; push stop first, so it doesn't make that sound.

LANA

(voice) AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!

ALLI

(to LANA) We're not fighting. We are not fighting. No bad vibes. No bad karma. HEATHER enters carrying a large bowl of popcorn. She sees ALLI drops the bowl and begins to hyperventilate.
ALLI

Cool it Heather. I'm going to put clothes on. There are no men in the house, and I'm not attacking Hannah.

LANA

(voice) AHHHHHHH!!!!!!!

ALLI

Or Lana.

(under her breath) Yet. There is a long pause while ALLI waits for Heather to pick up the popcorn. Why don't you pick up the popcorn? Heather leaves.
HANNAH

It's ok. I'll pick it up.

ALLI

You don't have to do that sweetheart.

HANNAH

Really, it's ok. I should have used the tape player, right?

ALLI

Not all the problems here start with you. We are all screwed up. And we were all screwed up before you got here.

HANNAH

I'll still pick it up.

ALLI

If you want to. But, please do me a favor.

HANNAH

Sure.

ALLI

Don't sing any more. It's time for Bonnie to be home, she'll want to sing, and that will bring the baby prematurely.

HANNAH

You're so mean.

LANA

(voice) AHHHHHH!!!!

ALLI

I'm I?

(pause) Anyway, Bonnie's going to be real tense.

HANNAH

Is there problem with keeping the safe-house?

ALLI

No. She's got the city grant for our little "no man" commune. Bonnie's boss may come check us once or twice, but when it comes to work or acting like a professional, Bonnie can "put on the dog." That won't ever be a problem.

HANNAH

So why is she going to be real tense?

ALLI

Bill's coming tomorrow, and Bonnie's going to be extra motherly. Super mother.

HANNAH

I thought men couldn't come into the house?

ALLI

Bill is her older sister. Bobby is her older brother. I thought you and Bonnie were related?

HANNAH

I really don't know Bonnie. She's my second cousin.

ALLI

How old are you sweetie?

HANNAH

Sixteen.

ALLI

Lots of boy friends, I bet?

HANNAH

No.

ALLI

Well don't worry. You're virtue is safe with Bonnie on the guard.

HANNAH

What do you mean?

ALLI

Nothing, angel. Sometime you'll have to tell me why you're here. Don't misunderstand me; I'm glad you're here. Hell, I don't know you, but I'm sure I'm glad you're here. I'm not so sure about Helen Keller.

HANNAH

Bonnie said her name is Heather.

ALLI

You are too sweet.

HANNAH

Thanks. It really is no big deal.

(pause) Why I'm here. No big deal. I probably won't be here long.

ALLI

As long as it takes, sweetheart.
