Glass Balls
by john daniels, jr
Discription:
Todd is God, a Rock-n-Roll god.  At least he was.  He has money.  He has a mansion.  He has women.  He has an illness.  He hears your thoughts.  He speaks to you, and you never know it.  He is all alone, except for Max.  He never leaves, but he’s always gone.  He thinks, therefore we are.  He dies but doesn’t die.  And then there’s Max.  Rock-n-Roll.

Todd’s fame was larger than anything, except his desire for speed, acid, women and  rock-n-roll.   Fame didn't exclude him from disease.  Max has always been his guide.  Todd was able to overcome the desire for speed and acid.  Now he is in self-imposed exile in his mansion with Max his butler.

Todd does not know genius.  He knows he can write music, and people want to hear it.  He knows he can hear and speak to people without them ever knowing it, and this lets him know their true feelings.  He knows he loves women.  He knows he hates women.  He knows he has advancing arthritis and blindness.  He does not believe in an afterlife.  Max listens to him.

CAST:  3-male, 4-female, plus an ensemble of 4 any mix.

The following is sample scene from Glass Balls

ACT I, i

                                                                                      [Max is setting center stage
                                                                                      making tea using a Chinese
                                                                                      tea service.  Todd is
                                                                                      squatting in the bay window
                                                                                      facing Max.]

   TODD

We don't know how to starve.  We don't practice.  We don't understand hungry, Max.

              (pause)

One night all us Americans are going to do too much shit and
when we crash, ZAP!  They've nuked our asses while we are
asleep.  It's...

(singing from the John Lennon song)

              Imagine there's no countries,
              It's easy if you try...

   MAX

The cold war is over.

   TODD

(A total change of delivery.  An aside to Max)

The Russians are not our enemies, never really where.  You know American business created the great Russian threat.  As long as they were evil and powerful, there was going to be big arms contracts.  Stay with me, Max.  Our enemies are our poor pissed-off  non-Christians.  The world is full of them.  If Pakistan and India can afford nuclear booms, any crazy world domination wanna be can.  Where was I?  OK.

Seven out of every ten dead.  One walking bar-b-que and two others looking for food.

[Todd turns and looks out the
                                                                               window.  He hangs from the
                                                                               curtain rod.]

We don't know empty bellies, Max.  Cannibals, we'll all be cannibals.  We'll eat each other and hunt each other with bones and rocks.

[He drops down from the rod and
                                                                               looks out.]

                 (pause)

I don't want to go through that Max.  I'm not a hunter.

                 (pause)

I'm tired of being hunted.  I want just enough warning to fry my brain on acid and walk out the front door.  I'll stick my chest out like Tarzan and, phew, vaporize.  All the meat burned off my bones, and my last thoughts in Technicolor.

                 (pause)

No cannibals, Max.  Promise me, no cannibals.
