Rock and Roll Christmas ’57 is a new musical set in Bastrop, Texas during
the 125th celebration of the founding of Bastrop. The action takes
place over the two days prior to The Main Street Christmas Parade and Opera
House Christmas Pageant, and during the parade and pageant. Change
is in the air for America and Bastrop, so is romance and uncertainty. Christmas
Carols, beat poetry, rock-a-billy music, wise-crackers, new romance, pseudo-heartbreak
and literacy all lead to the pageant.
The pageant is eclectic, starring local groups and individuals performing gags, songs, dances and routines, rejoicing in the season and the city. There are the blue jeans, leather jackets, colorful hair ribbons and poodle skirts as well as the traditional Victorian dress worn during the Christmas pageant itself. By the end of American Rock-n-Roll Christmas ’57 everyone is happy. There is hope for the future and pleasure in the present. With historical perspective, the innocence of these times can be appreciated and punctuated by the sprit of the people and the sound track that begins a new age.
